DAR ES SALAAM, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian police said on Thursday they have seized 300 kilograms of cannabis in Lake Victoria and arrested three suspects in connection with the drugs.
Ramadhan Ng'anzi, the Mwanza regional police commander, said police patrol seized the cannabis and arrested the suspects in Lake Victoria on Wednesday.
"The suspects were ferrying the cannabis wrapped in seven sacks and two small plastic bags in a boat," Ng'anzi told Xinhua in a telephone interview.
He said preliminary investigations indicated that the cannabis was being transported from Tarime district in Mara region to Mwanza region across the lake.
"Drug traffickers are now using the lake to traffic drugs after police had reinforced security measures along roads in the Lake Victoria regions," he said.
Ng'anzi said the three suspects will be charged in court for illegal possession of the drugs after investigations involving multi-agencies were completed. Enditem
