TBILISI, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- A multi-block residential building collapsed on Friday in Georgia's western coastal city of Batumi, leaving several people trapped under the ruins.

A woman and a child have been rescued from the ruins, according to local media reports.

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili who had arrived in Batumi soon after the incident announced that about 300 rescuers were searching for 10-15 people in ruins.

"According to the available information, there are about 10-15 people trapped and we are doing everything to resolve the situation in time. About 300 rescuers are working, they have all the equipment and intensive work is underway," Garibashvili said.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs said it has launched an investigation to find out the cause of the incident. Enditem
