DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has urged the African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) to continue creating policies and legislation that advocate the promotion of women economic empowerment, the presidency said on Sunday.
A statement issued by the Directorate of Presidential Communications at State House said the president made the appeal on Saturday during an AWLN virtual meeting that deliberated on the economic empowerment of women in the various areas of development.
President Hassan said Tanzania has introduced women economic empowerment councils across the country aimed at promoting their empowerment.
She pledged to enhance transparency in public spending, as well as intensify efforts aimed at curbing the COVID-19 pandemic.
President Hassan said her administration will continue addressing issues related to climate change which has caused poor rainfall and affected agricultural production.
On May 23, the head of state addressed a similar meeting and pledged to appoint more women in leadership positions.
AWLN was launched at the UN headquarters in New York in June 2017 to mobilize African women toward a continental movement that will elevate the status of women's leadership in Africa. Enditem
