JERUSALEM, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- An ancient shekel, dating back to about 2,000 years ago, was discovered in Jerusalem, the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) said on Tuesday.
The silver coin was found by an 11-year-old girl who came with her family to an archeological sifting experience in a national park near the old city of Jerusalem.
The shekel, which weighs about 14 grams, was probably minted by one priest of the Jewish Second Temple, shortly before the destruction of the temple.

The coin bears an inscription of a cup with the ancient Hebrew caption "Israeli shekel." IAA researchers believe that it was made from the silver reserves kept in the temple. ■
